What is AI search visibility? A plain-English guide

When someone asks an AI assistant for “the best tool for X”, it answers with a short list of names. AI search visibility is how often yours is on that list.

The short answer

AI search visibility is the share of relevant buyer questions where an AI assistant names your brand, how high you appear in its answer, and whether it points to your website as a source.

It's also called generative engine optimisation (GEO) or answer engine optimisation (AEO). The names differ, but the idea is the same: being included in generated answers, not just listed on a results page.

Why it matters now

A search results page gives people ten links to compare. An AI answer gives them a handful of names and a reason for each, and many people stop there. If you aren't in that short list, you aren't being considered.

The hard part is that this happens out of sight. Your analytics show visits from search engines. They don't show the answer a buyer got from an assistant before they ever reached a website.

How it differs from SEO

Traditional SEO and AI visibility overlap, but they aren't the same game.

  • SEO aims for a position on a results page. AI visibility aims to be named in a generated answer.
  • SEO is measured in rankings and clicks. AI visibility is measured in mention rate, position in the list, sources cited, and who is recommended instead.
  • Answers vary from run to run, so there is no single fixed “rank”. You measure a rate across many questions.
  • Third-party sources (reviews, comparison articles, communities) often matter more than your own pages, because assistants lean on what others say about you.
  • Engines that search the live web still depend on pages that can be crawled and understood, so good technical SEO helps both.

What decides whether you're recommended

Nobody outside the AI labs knows the exact mechanics, and they change often. In practice, three things seem to drive answers:

  • What the model learned during training: brands that were widely discussed before its cut-off are easier for it to recall.
  • What live search retrieves: engines with web search pull current pages and quote them, so fresh, well-structured, crawlable pages help.
  • Which sources it trusts: review sites, “best of” articles, documentation, and active communities are cited again and again.

How to measure it properly

A single screenshot proves very little, because answers change. A useful measurement does four things:

  • Asks realistic buyer questions (“best CRM for a five-person agency”), without naming your brand, since naming yourself would inflate the result.
  • Repeats each question more than once and averages, to smooth out randomness.
  • Records whether you're mentioned, in what position, and which sources are cited.
  • Tracks the trend over weeks, and compares you with the competitors that keep appearing instead of you.

Frequently asked questions

Is AI search visibility the same as GEO or AEO?

They describe very similar work. GEO (generative engine optimisation) and AEO (answer engine optimisation) are alternative names for improving how often AI-generated answers include your brand.

Can I pay to be recommended in an AI answer?

Not in the organic answers that Citeably measures. Improving visibility means making your brand easier to find, understand, and trust, and being talked about on sources the engines rely on.

How long does it take to improve?

It depends on the engine. Assistants that search the live web can react within days to weeks of a new listing, review, or article. Changes that depend on a model's training take much longer.
